In marital therapy, I teach the couple about Gottman's "Four Horsemen of the Apocalypse," all of which are toxic in a marriage. The Four Horsemen are Criticism, Defensiveness, Contempt, and Stonewalling. There are some gender differences which are typical here: the woman is more likely to be critical and the man is more likely to stonewall.
