Thoughts on Marriage Counseling

A Look at Priorities

Tranmission Shop Sometimes I am baffled when people whose marriage is in trouble tell me that they can’t afford marriage counseling. I can’t think of anything more important to me than my marriage. If my wife and I needed counseling, we would do whatever we had to do in order to find a way to pay for it.

As corny as it may sound, if your marriage is in crisis, you can’t afford not to begin marriage counseling.

Here’s another way to look at it. If your car needed a new transmission, you would buy a new transmission, right? You need a car. Well, I happen to know that a few months of marriage counseling costs less than a new transmission! And just like you need a car, you need a happy marriage.

Must be nice to have money.

I’m in a troubled marriage. 2 kids (one newborn), I’m a college student, she’s working and making just enough to get by. We don’t struggle too much financially because we’ve got our bills down to a science, but there’s little wiggle room and certainly not enough for 40 minute sessions that cost ~$200. We put about zilch into savings and we’re always one bad transmission away from a financial crisis.

If my car needed a new transmission, I would probably park it and buy a bicycle.

What I don’t understand is why it costs 6 dollars a minute, when one of the major issues couples fight about is money?

$200 for 40 minutes? Is that really a typical fee for therapists in Philadelphia? Sounds awfully high to me. I suggest you look around for a better price.
