In marriage counseling, my goal is not to have a couple avoid all disagreements. What I do want to do away with are the destructive fights: the yelling, the name-calling, the anger, the not speaking to one another for days at a time. Rather, the goal is to help Danville couples learn how to process disagreements in ways that are not destructive. This means that both people remain calm, don't blame each other, don't criticize each other, and don't interrupt while the other person is speaking. Oh yes, and each person must listen when the other is speaking! We practice all of this in the office until the couple is able to do it on their own. Couples learn how to handle their issues with mutual respect and keep communication going.
Should a married person be Facebooking their exes? For example, should a married Danville man be Facebook friends with a woman he used to date? In my opinion this is dangerous territory, and the safe practice is not to have any exes as friends. What I have seen happen is that communication with the ex begins innocently enough, but then grows into reminiscing about old times, then to complaining about the current relationship, then a meeting is set up - a lunch or a coffee meet - and then, in the worse case, you start to think how much better your life would be with this person - and romance is rekindled. Why risk this?
