Unfortunately, many Moraga couples who would benefit from marriage counseling wait much longer than they should before beginning the therapy process. I have seen this many times. Why do couples put off therapy? Well, probably because many people think it that therapy isn't "fun." Well, they are right, it's not always fun (although we have some great moments!). But there is work involved in therapy. We have to get to the root causes of your issues, and that can take some digging, some exploration, and talking about some things that aren't easy to talk about. But none of this shouldn't be a reason to delay starting couples counseling, should it? After all, what is more important than your marriage?
It's critical to choose the right counselor: one who is an expert at working with couples. That's because "couples therapy may be the hardest form of therapy and most therapists aren't good at it," according to an article by William Doherty in the professional journal Psychotherapy Networker. "Surveys indicate that about eighty percent of therapists in private practice do couples therapy. Where they got their training is a mystery because most therapists practicing today never took a course in couples therapy and never did their internships under supervision from someone who'd mastered the art. From a consumer's point of view going in for couples therapy is like having your broken leg set by a doctor who skipped orthopedics in medical school," said Doherty.
i think Doherty is right. Too many counselors who work with couples really have no business doing so. Frankly, some therapists will take any client just because they need the money. They are doing a disservice to couples.
On the other hand, I have extensive training in couples counseling and have studied with most of the leaders in the field. I have helped many Moraga couples improve their marriages! If you'd like to talk about it, email me at jay@eastbaycouples.com or call me at 925-351-8447.
